Selection Guidelines/Process

FHSI recently revised the Sister Cecilia B. Abhold Award selection process to recognize outreach programs truly demonstrating innovation when serving migrant and seasonal farmworkers.

An outreach practice may be innovative if it...
  • Utilizes program or community resources in a particularly new or effective way.

  • Addresses a new or emerging issue among farmworkers.

  • Improves upon a previous practice or adapts a practice used with other special populations.

  • Adopts a new approach to providing outreach or health services to farmworkers.
Eligibility
Any organization providing outreach services to farmworkers may submit an innovative outreach practice to be considered for publication in FHSI's Innovative Outreach Practices Report. However, only innovative outreach practices from Migrant/Community Health Centers and Migrant Voucher Programs will be considered for the Sister Cecilia B. Abhold Award. Though outreach programs may submit up to three innovative outreach practices every year, they are not eligible to receive the award two years in a row.

Award Selection Process
Each innovative outreach practice is evaluated with the innovative practices in their respective migrant stream. FHSI recognizes the value in peer-to-peer review and exchange. For this reason, FHSI takes pride in involving outside agencies in the review of the Sister Cecilia B. Abhold Award nominations. The selection committee consists of a representative from the previous award recipient organization, and two representatives from Migrant/Community Health Centers and three FHSI staff members.

Anonymity
To ensure anonymity and an objective review process, all names, organizations, and other identifying information are removed from the award nominations before they are reviewed by the selection committee.
