FHSI focuses on four priority areas in its work with farmworker-serving health organizations in order to increase farmworkers’ access to care, decrease health disparities and deliver culturally and linguistically appropriate health care.
Health Outreach and Enabling Services represent a broad spectrum of activities that facilitate farmworkers’ access to health care services. These activities may include case management, transportation, interpretation, and informing farmworkers how to access services.
Health Education and Prevention are key components of a holistic health care model, enabling farmworkers to make positive choices affecting their health. Beyond health education, tactics may include conducting health screenings, hosting community discussions on ways to promote health and wellbeing, and providing preventative tools, such as glucometers, condoms, and sunscreen.
Cultural Competency and Responsiveness are approaches for effectively addressing farmworker needs. Culturally competent organizations recognize the unique characteristics of their farmworker populations and make a commitment to respecting and responding appropriately. Examples may include the provision of ongoing cultural sensitivity trainings for staff and recognizing and planning for differences in health beliefs and perceptions.
Health Data and Outcome Measures are the tools and processes used by outreach programs to continually track and capture outreach efforts and understand farmworker needs. These data are used to design responsive outreach programs, evaluate and improve upon outreach activities, and document the effectiveness of outreach programs.
