FHSI History















Farmworker Health Services, Inc. (FHSI), formerly the East Coast Migrant Health Project, was founded in 1970 by the National Migrant Worker Council. FHSI was established to provide health prevention and clinical outreach services to farmworkers along the Eastern seaboard, training and placing clinicians and outreach workers in Community Health Centers in 90 counties spanning 17 states.

Key Historical Accomplishments
1974
FHSI received funding for the inception of the East Coast Migrant Head Start Project, which spun off and self incorporated in 1978.
1983
FHSI administers the Migrant Assurance Program, a voucher system implemented to guarantee medical services for farmworkers from private physicians in Virginia.
1984
FHSI received funding for a sister organization in the Midwest, marking the inception of Migrant Health Promotion, formerly the Midwest Migrant Health Information Office. This entity spun off and self incorporated in 1989 and is now a leader in Promotor/a models.
1990
FHSI conducts the Florida Freeze Project, providing emergency relief to 16,000 farmworkers after a catastrophic freeze devastates Florida's winter crops and leaves tens of thousands of farmworkers without work.
2000
FHSI leveraged its 30 years of direct service experience and leadership in health outreach and prevention strategies into a training and technical assistance role serving Migrant and Community Health Centers nationwide.
2006
FHSI opened an office in California and relocated its executive functions. FHSI still maintains its East Coast office in Washington, DC.
After over 37 years of experience, FHSI is expanding its client scope beyond health centers to include Migrant and Seasonal Head Start agencies, health departments, housing agencies, and all other community-based organizations where farmworkers may be accessing care.
